Your questions
Car insurance in Malta, explained
Is car insurance compulsory in Malta?
Yes. Every vehicle used on Maltese roads must have at least third-party insurance by law, the same minimum that applies across the EU. You also need valid cover in place to renew the vehicle's road licence.
What is the difference between third party, fire & theft and comprehensive cover?
Third party only covers damage or injury you cause to other people and their property — not your own car. Third party, fire & theft adds cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire. Comprehensive also covers damage to your own car, including accidents that were your fault.
What affects the price of a car insurance quote?
Mainly the driver's age and driving experience, the car's value and engine size, your claims history and no-claims discount, who will drive the car, and where it is kept and how it is secured. Prices for the same car and driver can differ a lot between insurers, which is why it is worth getting more than one quote.
What is the excess on a car insurance policy?
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself before the insurer pays the rest. Agreeing to a higher voluntary excess usually lowers your premium, but it means you pay more out of pocket if you do claim.
Can I transfer my no-claims discount from another country?
Often, yes. Many insurers in Malta will take a no-claims discount earned abroad into account if you can show proof, usually a letter from your previous insurer. Ask each insurer when you request your quote.
Is comprehensive cover worth it for a new car?
It is usually the sensible choice, because a new car is the most expensive to repair or replace. Some comprehensive policies also include new-for-old replacement for a limited period — check the policy wording, as this differs between insurers.
Does CarsMT sell car insurance?
No. CarsMT is not an insurer or an insurance intermediary and does not give insurance advice. The buttons on this page take you to each insurer's own quote page — the quote, the policy and any advice come directly from them.
