Vehicle history checks: your questions
What is a vehicle history check?
It's a report built from public and private records — insurance claims, police databases, past registrations and inspection data — that shows a car's documented past: recorded mileage over time, accidents or write-offs, theft reports, and how many people have owned it. carVertical pulls from over 1,000 data sources across 45+ countries to build it.
Do I need the VIN, or does a registration number work?
Either works. The VIN (vehicle identification number, usually 17 characters) is the most precise — it's unique to that exact car and is usually stamped on the windscreen or a door frame. A registration/number plate works too and is often what a seller will give you first.
What exactly does a mileage rollback mean?
It's when a car's odometer has been wound back to make it look like it's travelled fewer kilometres than it actually has — a way of inflating the resale price. carVertical compares recorded mileage readings from multiple points in the car's history (inspections, services, past sales) to flag a reading that doesn't add up.
Why check a car's history before buying it in Malta?
Many cars sold in Malta were previously registered and driven abroad, which means local service history alone won't show the full picture. A history report checks international databases — accidents, mileage and theft records from the car's time in other countries — that a Maltese seller may not know about either.
