How to Renew Your Road Licence in Malta: When It's Due & Late Fines

Every car on Malta's roads needs a valid road licence, renewed once a year. Renewing it is quick: you can do it online or through your insurance agent. Leave it too long, though, and the fines start adding up every month.

This guide is based on Transport Malta's Renewal of Road Licence and When is renewal due pages (updated June 2025). Check them before you renew, in case anything has changed since.

When is my road licence due?

The licence is valid for one year. Your renewal month depends on the first letter of your registration number. For example, a car whose number starts with "A" is due in January.

First letter: Renewal month
A, M, YJanuary
B, N, ZFebruary
C, OMarch
D, PApril
E, QMay
F, RJune
G, SJuly
H, TAugust
I, USeptember
J, VOctober
K, WNovember
L, XDecember

Personalised plates follow the same rule: the licence is set to match the first letter of the plates.

The licence stays payable for as long as the car is registered to you, even if you don't drive it. It only stops when the car is officially garaged, scrapped or transferred to someone else.

What you need

  1. A valid insurance certificate
  2. A valid VRT, if your car is old enough to need one. See our guide to VRT in Malta.
  3. The licence fee, which depends on the vehicle type

Cash isn't accepted. Check Transport Malta's payment methods before you pay.

How to renew

Online, from home

  1. Make sure your insurer has entered your insurance details, and your VRT garage has entered your test result, if you needed one. The online system can't renew the licence without them.
  2. Renew on licenzji-vetturi.gov.mt and pay online.
  3. The licence disc is sent to your address by registered post, at no charge. If it never arrives, Transport Malta has a declaration form for that (VEH 29).

Through your insurance agent or broker

Your insurance agency or broker can renew the licence for you, usually at the same time as your insurance. Bring the documents listed above.

Weekend scheme licences

Licences on the weekend scheme can't be renewed online or by an agent. They're renewed at Transport Malta's offices, with the same documents.

What happens if you renew late

If the licence isn't renewed within three months of the renewal date, Transport Malta charges an administrative fine of €10 for every month, up to a maximum of €100. This doesn't apply to vehicles registered to a motor dealer.

Selling your car?

Any unpaid road licences, fines or contraventions on the car have to be paid before it can be transferred to the buyer. Sort these out before you list the car so the sale isn't held up. When you're ready, you can post your car for sale on CarsMT, or browse cars for sale in Malta.
