Used Car Prices in Malta (2026): What Cars Actually Cost
By Stoyan Stoyanov · 3 hours ago
How much should you expect to pay for a used car in Malta? Rather than guess, we looked at every car listed for sale on CarsMT on 23 October 2026 — 129 cars, almost all from private sellers — and worked out what they actually cost. These are asking prices, not final sale prices, so there is usually some room to negotiate.
The short answer
- The typical used car in Malta is listed at around €10,000 (the median asking price).
- Half of all cars are priced between €4,500 and €19,200.
- About one in four cars costs under €5,000, and half cost under €10,000.
- The typical car for sale is a 2013 model, so a car that is 10–15 years old is completely normal here.
Used car prices by age
Age is the biggest driver of price. Here is the median asking price for each age group, with the middle half of prices shown as a range:
| Year of carCars listedTypical priceMiddle half of prices | |||
| 2019–2022 | 18 | €25,000 | €15,500 – €73,000 |
| 2014–2018 | 44 | €11,500 | €8,700 – €23,900 |
| 2009–2013 | 36 | €6,550 | €4,100 – €14,750 |
| 2008 or older | 31 | €4,200 | €2,500 – €9,000 |
The newest group has a very wide range because it includes a few performance and luxury cars. Very few cars from 2023 onwards are on sale second-hand yet.
Automatic or manual: the biggest price gap
Automatics cost a lot more in Malta, even when you compare cars of the same age:
| Year of carAutomaticManual | ||
| 2014–2018 | €15,000 (27 cars) | €8,000 (15 cars) |
| 2009–2013 | €12,500 (15 cars) | €4,800 (20 cars) |
| 2008 or older | €9,999 (9 cars) | €4,000 (21 cars) |
Across all ages, the typical automatic is listed at €17,750 and the typical manual at €5,100. If you are comfortable driving a manual, it is the easiest way to save money on a used car in Malta.
Prices by type of car
| Body typeCars listedTypical price | ||
| Hatchback | 53 | €5,200 |
| Estate | 5 | €5,500 |
| Saloon | 11 | €11,000 |
| Convertible | 10 | €15,950 |
| SUV | 28 | €18,750 |
| Coupé | 18 | €21,500 |
Hatchbacks are the most common and the cheapest — they suit Malta's narrow streets and tight parking. SUVs cost more than three times as much as a typical hatchback.
Petrol or diesel? There is almost no difference: petrol cars are typically listed at €9,500 and diesels at €10,000.
Prices by make
Only makes with at least five cars for sale are included, so the figures mean something:
| MakeCars listedTypical price | ||
| Peugeot | 6 | €4,450 |
| Ford | 6 | €4,500 |
| Suzuki | 5 | €6,500 |
| Fiat | 7 | €7,200 |
| Kia | 5 | €7,500 |
| Volkswagen | 6 | €7,700 |
| Toyota | 11 | €9,500 |
| BMW | 15 | €15,000 |
| Audi | 7 | €16,900 |
| Mercedes-Benz | 14 | €19,750 |
| Porsche | 5 | €46,000 |
BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota are the most-listed makes. A make's typical price depends a lot on the age of the cars on sale, so use these as a rough guide rather than a valuation.
What your budget gets you
- Under €3,000 (16 cars): mostly hatchbacks around 20 years old, almost all manual — think Peugeot 206 or 107, Kia Picanto, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Corolla.
- €3,000 – €6,000 (30 cars): the busiest price range. Typically a 2009 hatchback or small SUV, mostly manual — Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Hyundai i20, Peugeot 2008, Mazda Demio.
- €6,000 – €10,000 (18 cars): cars from around 2014, with a growing share of automatics — Toyota Yaris and Aygo, Fiat 500, Mazda2, Ford EcoSport.
- €10,000 – €20,000 (36 cars): mostly automatic, typically 2014, including premium models — Audi A4 and Q5, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, VW Polo, MINI, Suzuki Swift.
- €20,000 – €40,000 (14 cars): typically 2016 premium cars and SUVs — BMW 4 Series and X1, Audi A3 and Q2, Jaguar E-Pace, Porsche Boxster.
Tips before you buy
- Compare like with like. Match the year, gearbox and mileage before deciding whether a price is fair — the tables above show how much each one moves the price.
- Be wary of prices far below the rest. A recent car listed at a fraction of similar cars is a warning sign. Never send a deposit for a car you have not seen.
- Check the car's history. A vehicle history check shows mileage records, accidents and theft records, and is especially worth it for imported cars.
- Check the VRT and licence. Ask when the car last passed its VRT and whether the road licence is paid up.
- Budget for insurance. Get a car insurance quote before you commit, especially for an automatic or a premium make.

How we worked this out
We took every car listed for sale on CarsMT on 23 October 2026 and left out a handful of listings with placeholder or obviously mistyped prices (such as €1). "Typical price" means the median: half of the cars are listed for less and half for more, so a few very expensive cars don't distort it. Groups with fewer than five cars are not shown. We will update these figures as the market changes.
