What people ask about renting a car in Malta
Can I rent a car in Malta without a deposit?
Yes, from some companies. Car Rentals Ltd, Daniel's Car Rentals, RentGo Malta and Dolmen Car Rental publish a no-deposit option — usually tied to their own full cover or to particular cars, so check the conditions on each company's page. Most others hold a deposit on your card.
Which car rental companies in Malta accept a debit card?
Their published terms say Car Rentals Ltd, JS Car Hire, Malta Car Hire, MSG Car Hire, Goldcar and Mayjo Car Hire accept a debit card for the deposit. Easy Car Hire Malta, Malta Car Rentals, RentGo Malta, Green Motion and Hertz accept one only in some cases — for example with their own full cover, or alongside a credit card. Enterprise and Europcar say debit cards are not accepted.
Usually, but it depends on the company. Daniel's Car Rentals, RentGo Malta, Carwiz Malta, Enterprise, Goldcar and Hertz say you can (some charge a fee). Many others don't mention it in their terms, so ask before you book — and note that some companies' roadside assistance doesn't cover Gozo. The car ferry runs from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr.
Yes. Dolmen Car Rental, Gozo Garage and Mayjo Car Hire are based on Gozo, and some deliver the car free to the Mġarr ferry terminal or your accommodation — so you can cross as a foot passenger and pick up a car on arrival.
Among the companies here that publish an amount, starting deposits range from €100 to €1,500 — and the amount often depends on the car and on whether you buy extra cover. The deposit is usually a hold on your card, released after you return the car.
"Deposit" is the lowest amount a company states — it often depends on the car and the cover you buy. Open a company for the full terms and the source. "Check prices" opens that company on DiscoverCars, our booking partner; CarsMT may earn a commission if you book.

How we collected this
Where these facts come from
Each company's entry is a plain-English summary of what that company publishes on its own website — its rental terms, FAQ or location page, linked on every company page with the date we checked it. If a company doesn't publish something, we say so rather than guess. Terms change, so always read the final terms before you pay.
This isn't a ranking: there are no scores, and no company has paid to be listed or placed. Companies are sorted by island, then local firms before international brands, then A–Z. We add more companies as we check their terms.
Run one of these companies, or spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll check and update it.
Run a car hire company in Malta or Gozo?
Listing is free. Send us the link to your published rental terms (deposit, excess, cards, Gozo, age) and we'll add your company with a link to your website. We only list what your own terms say.
Car rental bookings on CarsMT are provided by our partner DiscoverCars.com, a separate booking site. CarsMT may earn a commission when you book through it, at no extra cost to you. It has no effect on what this page says about any company.
